HISTORY

The patient was admitted to Beijing Puhua International Hospital with a history of “progressive disability in movement all four limbs movement for 3 years, speech and swallowing disturbances for the past year, with deterioration for the past 4 months.”
 
 

Medical Condition prior to Stem Cell Treatment

On admission Patient Kapliev was alert and with severe difficulty in speech due to his ALS. Tongue muscle atrophy was noted and the tongue protrusion was obviously limited. Tongue muscular fasciculation and poor lifting of soft palate were noted. Muscle strength: 1/5 was in the adductor and abductor of the shoulder joints; 1/5 was in the lifting muscle group; 1/5 was in the flexion and extension of bilateral elbow joints; 1/5 strength was in the right and left wrist; 1/5 was in the fingers bilaterally; 1/5 was in the adductor and abductor of left hip joints; 1-2/5 at the adductor and abductor of right hip joints; 1-2/5 was in the flexion and extension of the knees; 1/5 was in the dorsiflexion and plantar flexion of left foot; 2/5 was in the plantar flexion of right foot, 1/5 was in the dorsiflexion of right foot. Muscular tone of upper limbs was diminished, with hypoactive tendon reflexes. Muscular tone of the lower limbs was high, with active tendon reflexes. Pathological reflexes were not elicited. He could not complete the coordinated movement exams.
 
 

Stem Cell Treatment for Twenty-eight days

After admission, several medical protocols were applied including: improvement of cerebral blood flow and nutrition as well as symptomatic treatment including gastric tube insertion for nasal feeding, control of blood pressure and heart rate, combined with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and rehabilitation therapy.
 
 

Medical condition after Stem Cell Treatment

The patient’s condition was stable overall and he began to demonstrate good spirits. His difficulty with swallowing were improved, and he demonstrated good control of blood pressure and heart rate. He began to feel more energetic than before treatment. Significant improvement was noted in his spirits and emotional state. He began to be able to better and more easily support his head. His trunk also became stronger than before. Muscle strength: 2/5 was in the adductor and abductor of bilateral shoulder joints; 2/5 was in the lifting muscle group; 1+/5 was in the flexion and extension of bilateral elbow joints; 2/5 was in the right dorsiflexion of wrist; 1/5 was in the left wrist; 2/5 was in the fingers bilaterally; 2/5 was in the adductor and abductor of left hip joints; 1-2/5 was in the adductor and abductor of right hip joints;1-2/5 was in the flexion and extension of bilateral knees; 2+/5 was in the dorsiflexion and plantar flexion of left foot; 2/5 was in the plantar flexion of right foot, 1+/5 was in the dorsiflexion. Muscular tension in lower limbs was also improved compared with the time he was admitted.
 
The patient and his family were satisfied with the obviously overall positive effects of the initial treatment, and are considering a second round of stem cell treatment at the time of this report.
