HISTORY

Patient Omar Jose Alana Fernandez was a 35-year-old male from Venezuela at the time of admission to PIH. He was admitted to Puhua International Hospital in Beijing due to “Motion disorder in four limbs and aphasia following a traffic accident and subsequent surgery,” with a diagnosis of: ‘Brain trauma.’

Patient Omar Fernandez had suffered a road traffic accident on 23rd March 2000, which caused him severe brain trauma and general trauma. The trauma was more severe in his left frontal-parietal area and led to hemorrhage at a branch of the superficial left temporal artery.

He had a craniotomy with removal of cranial bone fragments and crushed brain tissue on 24th March 2000. He was in a coma for about one year, and on mechanical ventilation. He also suffered from mixed aphasia, spastic hemiplegia in the right side of his body, and spastic hemiparesis in the left side of his body.

Medical condition before Stem Cell Treatment (SCT) for Traumatic brain injury (TBI)

Before his stem cell treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI), Omar had suffered convulsions. He was in a state of quadriparesis, motor aphasia, but with relatively clear consciousness. He was confined to a wheelchair. He could not deal with his daily life independently. His head tended to droop, and alone he could not support his body properly.

For many years, Omar had relied on a stoma feeding fistula in order to obtain nourishment, because he could not swallow.

Improvement can also be seen in the movement of his legs. Before, the muscle strength of his leg was 0/5. Now the condition is better, presenting as 2/5 in left leg and 1/5 in right leg, which makes him able to move his legs to some extent.

Medical condition after Stem Cell Treatment (SCT) for Traumatic brain injury (TBI)

After Stem Cell Treatment (SCT) for his traumatic brain injury, Omar experienced substantial improvement. He no longer needed to rely on the stoma-feedingfistula, since he was again able swallow liquid food by himself. This alone made the Patient and his family very happy. Patient Fernandez developed better control of his head after his Stem Cell Therapy (SCT). With more strength, he was able to hold up his head unassisted for short periods. He also had more trunk strength, which meant that he was able to hold his body straighter than before.

Improvement was also seen in the movement and control of the patient’s legs. Before, the muscle strength of his leg was 0/5. Since treatment, Patient Fernandez was able to demonstrate 2/5 in left leg and 1/5 in right leg, which allowed him to once again be able independently to move his legs again to some extent.
