Tsukimi Watanabe

Tsukimi Watanabe

OVERVIEW

Name: Tsukimi Watanabe
Diagnosis: Cerebral Palsy
D.O.B: 03 January 2011
Gender: Female
Country: Japan

Treatment: Stem cell implantation via lumbar puncture, treatment to improve blood circulation of the brain and improve nutritional status of the nerve cells, combined with Chinese Traditional Medicine (TCM) (acupuncture) and rehabilitation therapy (occupational therapy and physical therapy).

HISTORY

Shortly after birth, little Patient Tsukimi was found with occasional involuntary contractions of her body and limbs, this was once followed within ~10 minutes by cardiac and respiratory arrest, from which she recovered after emergency management.

When she was 5~6 months old, she could lift her shoulders slightly off of the bed with her hands pushing the bed. However, her neck has never been able to support her head properly. Moreover, her left arm was relatively inflexible, and couldn’t coordinate with her other limbs. She was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at her local hospital.

Medical Condition before Stem Cell Treatment (SCT) for Cerebral Palsy

Her height was 74.4cm and her weight was 8.2kg. Appetite and eating was unsatisfactory (below normal). It was difficult for her to fall into sleep, as well as to stay sleeping.  She could be awakened too easily. Every night it took her father a long while to help her fall to sleep.

The child could make simple but apparently meaningless utterances. She was unable to sit independently, since she could not support herself.  Her ability to grasp objects in her hands was very clumsy, more so in the left hand.

Treatment Over One Month at Puhua International Hospital(PIH)

Stem cell implantation via lumbar puncture, therapy to improve blood circulation of the brain and improve nutritional status of the nerve cells, combined with Chinese Traditional Medicine (TCM) (acupuncture) and rehabilitation therapy (including occupational therapy and physical therapy).

Medical Condition after Stem Cell Treatment (SCT) for Cerebral Palsy

After the treatments, the patient’s condition began improving. She first was noted to have better eating and sleeping habits. She could fall into sleep by herself and sleep continuously for 8-9 hours during night. Her last current weight was 9 kg and last height was 75 cm.  She is beginning to show more ability to speak and now articulates some words like “eat.”  She response more sensitively to outside stimulation, and cooperates well with others during game like hide-and-seek. She can concentrate continuously on TV cartoon programs for u to 1-2 minutes. Whole body weight-bearing strength and control have improved significantly. She can support her trunk by using her two arms, and keeps her head held up for 20 minutes.  She can sit independently for more than ten seconds. Crawling shows greater agility and speed.  She can now “fast step” forward with assistance. Strength and flexibility of her hands and fingers are significantly improved. She can hold her drinking cup by both hands while she is drinking, and puts food into her mouth accurately with one hand. It now seems easier for her to use her left hand, which she does much more frequently now.
